Newborn Photography | by Seattle Photographer Casey Louise

What to expect for your newborn session with Casey Louise

It’s hard to think of a more special time to photograph in your life than when your new baby is finally here and in your arms. It is the biggest honor to be welcomed into your home (or presence if studio) during this huge time of transition, bliss and healing with your newborn. This guide will share everything you need to know in order to plan and prepare you for your newborn photoshoot with me as your photographer.

What I focus on capturing during your newborn photoshoot?

You’ve just birthed a new human into this world and your lives are now forever changed. This is a huge season of transition, healing and connection. There are a lot of bodily fluids, diapers and skin to skin. My goal is to capture this new sweet connection between your baby and each family member. Your baby will guide the session putting their needs and safety first. If they are comfortable being laid down I will capture solo images of baby, otherwise I make sure to capture the tiny details like fingers, toes, hair, ears, lips etc. all while being held in your arms. Newborn sessions are a mixture of documentary and lifestyle types of photography. The lifestyle photography portion of your session is the majority and that’s where I place you in the best lighting and offer prompts and natural posing. While you will probably look like you just had a baby….because you did, I guide you through prompts that focus on this new deep connection because thats what deserves to be remembered.

How to schedule your newborn photoshoot??

As we know, babies like to arrive when they are ready and birth can be unpredictable at times. To make it easy to secure your photo session with me, you’ll “schedule” yourself on my calendar for around two weeks after your due date just to have a tentative date reserved. Your actual newborn session will officially be scheduled AFTER baby arrives, when you let me know baby is born and how you and your family are feeling and healing. Your newborn photoshoot can actually happen any time within the fourth trimester (3 months after birth!). Some families are ready to capture those sweet newborn details right away, while other families may want more time to adjust before having pictures taken. When you have secured your newborn session with me I always leave flexibility in my schedule so I am able to offer at least two dates within the first three weeks of life. Some benefits of waiting closer to 3-4 weeks include, gassy smiles, rounder cheeks, more time for healing and easier time with feedings.

How to prepare the day of your newborn session?

For in home newborn photoshoots, the only things I recommend to prepare is to make your home a comfortable temperature for you and baby (Babies like to be slightly warmer than us), clear your nightstands/ end tables by your bed, and offer a feeding to baby right before I arrive. Newborn sessions always start at 10am and can last up to two hours long. This longer photoshoot provides plenty of time to offer baby anything they need when they need it. A longer session also allows for a relaxed and comfortable experience. I do offer clothing from my client closet for both mom and baby if you would like me to bring options. Your baby will have 1-2 outfits plus just a diaper or bare bottom if they are okay with being changed. When I arrive I go through the rooms of your home to find the best window with natural lighting. Once I find the best natural lighting, I clear a space if needed and we capture your images there. Most images will be close cropping meaning you won’t see much in the images aside from your baby and the family member with them. This means there is ZERO need to clean your home to prepare. I want this to be an easy and supportive photo session.

Delivery of your baby's images

I always send sneak peeks within 24 hours after your newborn session. The full gallery is available within two weeks after your photoshoot. I deliver your sneak peeks via text message and the full gallery is a downloadable online gallery in color, B&W, high resolution and web size. These images will be valued for generations when your great grandchildren are looking back through time. As your baby quickly grows you will be able to reflect back through this gallery remembering those first days with the newest love of your life. As a fellow mom and friend, thank you for trusting me to capture this time for your family.
