Helping Your Toddler Feel Included in Your Newborn Baby’s Photoshoot

Newborn photoshoot with toddlers | How to help the feel included

A newborn photoshoot with toddlers can be fun, relaxed and connected!

Expecting a newborn while raising a toddler is both exciting and overwhelming. Choosing to capture this season with a newborn photoshoot is a gift you’re giving your entire family — one that will last a lifetime.

When I was pregnant with my second baby, my toddler was with me for every step of the journey — from ultrasounds to doctor appointments, and even at the birth itself. Including her was so important to me, and it shaped the way I now approach newborn photography with growing families.

As your toddler steps into their new role as a big sibling, the contrast between their independence and your tiny newborn can feel surreal. It’s a fleeting moment — one you’ll want to remember. Once your baby arrives, your toddler may experience a wide range of emotions. That’s completely normal. As your photographer, I’m here to make this experience feel calm, joyful, and meaningful. Together, we’ll create a newborn session that includes your toddler in a way that feels natural, fun, and full of connection.

Before the Session: Easy Ways to Prepare Your Toddler

1. Keep the excitement going.

Depending on their age, toddlers love to help. Encourage their curiosity by inviting them to pick out baby’s outfit, grab a diaper, or point out baby’s tiny toes.
Involving them ahead of time helps them feel included and proud of their new role.

2. Show them who I am!

Toddlers are much more comfortable when they recognize the person holding the camera. I always recommend showing your toddler pictures or videos of me before your session. I share videos and photos on my website and social media so they can start to feel familiar with my face and voice. This helps ease any shyness and makes our first interaction feel more like a playdate than a photoshoot.

3. Time it right.

Try to schedule your newborn session after your toddler has eaten and when they’re well-rested — usually between naps. A full belly and good energy go a long way toward a smooth session!

During the Session: Keeping Things Toddler-Friendly

1. Bring toddler-approved snacks.

Pack small, clean, mess-free snacks that are easy to grab and go. Some favorites include:
– Yogurt drops
– String cheese or cheese cubes
– Applesauce pouches
– Freeze-dried fruit
– Veggie puffs or crackers

2. Music makes magic.

Does your toddler have a favorite song or playlist? Share it with me! A little background music can help them relax, move, and engage naturally during the session.

How I Approach a Newborn photoshoot with toddlers as your photographer!

My number one goal is to keep the experience stress-free and centered on connection. In fact, I often build the flow of the session around your toddler. A happy toddler = a happy family.

• If they’re shy or unsure, we’ll begin with quiet photos of your baby while giving your toddler space to warm up. I’ll gently invite them in with prompts like, “Can you show me where your baby’s toes are?” or “Do you want to smell their hair?”

• If they’re ready to jump right in, we’ll start with sibling photos while their attention is fresh and focus is high.

• I’ll offer age-appropriate prompts that feel fun, not forced — like giving baby a gentle kiss, holding them with your support, or pointing to their nose.

• If we need to take a break or switch gears, we’ll follow your toddler’s lead. Flexibility is key!

What we’ll capture together during your newborn photoshoot:

During your newborn session, we’ll document a full story — one that honors every part of your growing family. I’ll gently guide you through:

• Solo portraits of your newborn — whether they’re cozy in your arms or peacefully resting nearby

• Parent + baby moments — quiet, emotional connections with each of you

• Full family images — your complete unit, just as you are in this season

• Toddler + newborn interactions — even if it’s just a quick glance or a tiny finger pointing to baby’s nose, I’m ready to capture the moments that matter

Including your toddler in your newborn session helps them feel involved and important during a time of big change. It also lays a foundation for connection — the beginning of a sibling bond that will grow right alongside them.

These images won’t just be for you today. One day, your children — and even your children’s children — will look back at these photos and see the love, care, and beauty of the family you’re building right now. Let's make your newborn photoshoot with toddlers a beautiful memory you'll remember for the rest of your lives.
