Fall & Holiday Family Photo Outfit Ideas | What to Wear

PNW Motherhood Photographer, Casey Louise shares the best outfit ideas for your fall/holiday family photos near Seattle, WA

You know you want memories of your family with YOU (mom) actually in the photos. Now the part every family worries about, what to wear?! This guide will make dressing yourself and your family for your session effortless and beautiful.

Always wear something comfortable that allows movement for your family photos!

If your outfit is stiff or tight, there won't be movement and movement allows for emotion in images. Tight clothing can also feel uncomfortable and turn your focus more on if clothes have shifted. Your focus should be completely on your children and family during your session.

It’s always better to wear something that will flow, feel cozy and allow you to completely be present creating memories during your session. Plus, chunky knit sweaters on kids and anything oversized is just about the cutest look you’ve ever seen. You can pair a silk skirt with a knit sweater and layer fabrics for a flattering but flowy outfit.

Wear Complimentary Fall Foliage Colors

When it comes to planning colors of clothing for your fall and holiday family photos think about the colors you see outside during this time of year. Rather than matching, wear a complimentary color for your session.

When we look outside in the PNW during the fall season we see of course, deep evergreen, stunning reds, pops of yellow and rusty orange. Depending on the location of your family photos you should also wear one of these colors. So if you’ll be in yellow/orange trees you can wear dark greens and vise versa. Blacks always look chic and classic. When opting for a light neutral color it’s always best to go with browns, beige and cream rather than actual white. White can reflect blue hues especially in the shade.

Above all, wear something you can have FUN in for your photos.

Wearing something that allows you to play with your children means dressing for the weather in the PNW!

Finally, this isa very important reminder that fall in the PNW is WET. You will thank yourself and your family will have SO much more fun if you show up ready to be wet and muddy during your family photoshoot. Wear boots, bring a towel and prioritize hugging and playing with your children over a mark that might get on your clothes. Dark colors are helpful for this. You are obsessed with your children and you are their very favorite person. Family photos are a gift to you and them creating memories where they can look back and actually see you in the photos! Focus on the connection more than the clothing and you will look incredible.
